Új Symposion was a progressive, experimental literary and artistic journal with a strong visuality in Vojvodina, the Hungarian region of Yugoslavia. Our main ambition with the exhibition was to interpret the editorial principles of the journal, the montages one can see on the pages, and the aspiration to equally represent a whole group of art branches by the visual design. Hence our goal to expose all the artworks, documents, photos, audiovisual elements and the characteristic, powerful graphics of the journal simultaneously. This required a modest, yet surface-creating installation.

The spaciousness of the exhibition rooms was inspired by the videos projected in two poles of the exhibition: the whole of the exhibition view was organized around the opposition of the sea’s and the wheat field’s horizon. The view of the sea that catches the eye immediately upon entering grew metaphorical: it stands for the cultural identity of Vojvodina. Opposite the open sea that was promising new horizons to the world, a rural stubble field appeared that recalled a faded past.
The creative community that grew around the editorial team and all but turned into a movement creating a literary and artistic milieu in Vojvodina that was marked by a proclivity for experimentation. Besides the literature, this exhibition focused on the exceptionally strong visual impact of the journal. The display outlined the characteristics of each editorial team, introduced the key actors associated with the periodical, and illustrated some of its many links with Hungary. Novi Sad Orpheuses exhibition allowed us to take stock of what is a still relevant literary-artistic achievement of cultural and historical significance.
The exhibition title Novi Sad Orpheuses is an allusion to the halfwit guitarist coming from the countryside and to the songsters of Vojvodina.
